Desires Shape is Stoll Vaughan’s fourth studio album, released April 17, 2020. It’s as pure and stripped down as possible, highlighting the intricate guitar, poignant lyrics, and traveled voice.
“A whirlwind of activity ensued after the release of The Conversation album” says Vaughan. “There were tour dates throughout the country, radio visits, festival performances and lengthy songwriting sessions with collaborators Devon Allman and Duane Betts for their Allman Betts Band. I was inspired by the way things were moving and blessed to find the time to write and record these songs for Desires Shape. I wanted to approach this record with a simplicity that would force its intimacy. The title is something of a reflection of that desire to exist and be proud of your raw form.”
Holly Gleason for American Songwriter states “…the literal and figurative journeyman artist has a way of tumbling details from the rafters and highlighting sentiments often missed. Hemingway direct lyrically, his melodies leave room for listeners to install themselves.” Matt Wallock of American Songwriter noted Vaughan’s “Dylanesque sense of imagining something just beyond one’s grasp.” Americana Highways’ Bill Bentley expresses "This is an album of soulful purity.” Writing for The Final on Vinyl, Keith Hannaleck mentions the “memorable vocals, guitar, harmonica, and thinking man’s unforgettable lyrics.”
Stoll Vaughan hails from Kentucky. His first two records Hold on Thru Sleep and Dreams and Love Like A Mule were in the Top 10 on the Americana charts. Vaughan co-produced/co-wrote Sketches of American Music, the debut EP by Duane Betts, son of Allman Brothers Band guitarist Dickey Betts. He co-wrote with The Allman Betts Band for their debut record, Down To The River, as well as their follow up album, Bless Your Heart. His music has been featured in major motion pictures and television series such as Treadstone, True Blood, Friday Night Lights, Shameless, The Office, The Open Road and composed music for David Lynch’s Webby Award winning Internet series Interview Project. Stoll has toured all over the United States and Europe. He has played venues such as Red Rocks, Hollywood Bowl, The Troubadour (NY and LA), Jones Beach. He performed at the 2019 Woody Guthrie Folk Festival. He has played Farm Aid, Master Musicians Festival, Folk Alliance International and was in the top three at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival songwriting competition. He has toured with the likes of John Mellencamp, John Fogerty, James McMurtry, Marty Stuart and opened for a Def Leppard/Journey co-bill (to name a few). Along with his solo touring, he is opening for The Allman Betts Band on select dates.
Stoll’s last record The Conversation, was co-produced by Carl Broemel, guitarist of My Morning Jacket and Mike Wanchic, Mellencamp’s longtime guitarist and co-producer. The album’s title, Stoll says, signifies “being in a continual conversation regarding people, God, and the fears we carry around—and how music interplays with everything emotionally and spiritually.”
“Stoll Vaughan is the real deal, authentic, American songwriter. He has a way with words that you just don’t see very often. It is always an honor to work with him and to call him my dear friend.” ~Duane Betts
“Stoll Vaughan is the consummate Americana songwriter. He’s single handedly brought our songwriting partnership to the next level. His resume speaks for itself. He is an unspoken legend. Truly.” ~Devon Allman
